Distribution And Sales Of Electricity Companies in Malaysia

The distribution and sale of electricity in Malaysia is a monopoly of the state-owned company Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB). TNB is the largest electricity utility in Malaysia and is responsible for the generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity to the peninsula and East Malaysia.

The Malaysian electricity grid is interconnected, meaning that electricity can flow between the different states and regions. This allows TNB to optimize its power generation and ensure a reliable electricity supply for all consumers.

TNB sells electricity to customers through a variety of tariffs, including a domestic tariff, an industrial tariff, and a commercial tariff. TNB also offers discounts for customers who consume electricity during off-peak hours.

The Malaysian government has been working to liberalize the electricity sector and allow for more competition. In 2016, the government launched the Electric Supply Industry Reform Programme (ESIRP), which aims to create a more competitive electricity market and promote private investment in the sector.

The first phase of the ESIRP has been completed, and the second phase is currently underway. Under the second phase of the ESIRP, the government plans to introduce a new power generation company, Malakoff Berhad, which will be majority-owned by TNB.
