Electric Companies in Malaysia

Electric companies in Malaysia are responsible for the generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity in the country. The electricity sector is overseen by the Malaysian Electricity Supply Industry (MESI), which is a statutory body under the Ministry of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change. The electricity sector is liberalised, and there are currently 23 licensed electricity generation companies, 8 licensed electricity transmission companies, and 22 licensed electricity distribution companies in Malaysia.

The electricity generation companies are responsible for the generation of electricity, while the electricity transmission companies are responsible for the transmission of electricity from the generation companies to the distribution companies. The distribution companies are responsible for the distribution of electricity to end-users.

Electricity tariffs in Malaysia are set by the Malaysian Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC). The current tariff structure for domestic consumers is a three-tier structure, with different tariffs for different usage levels. The first 200 kWh of electricity used per month is charged at the lowest tariff, while usage above 200 kWh is charged at a higher tariff. Usage above 600 kWh is charged at the highest tariff.
