Electricity Companies in Malaysia

The electricity sector in Malaysia is monopolized by Tenaga Nasional Berhad, the largest electric utility company in Malaysia. The company is vertically integrated and owns and operates all the major transmission and distribution infrastructure in the country. It also has a generation arm that operates a number of power plants, accounting for about 60% of the country’s total generation capacity. The remaining 40% is supplied by a number of independent power producers, most of which are gas-fired.

The electricity tariff in Malaysia is one of the lowest in Southeast Asia, and is heavily subsidized by the government. However, in recent years the government has been gradually reducing these subsidies, and electricity prices are expected to increase in the future.

The Malaysian electricity grid is connected to the grids of Singapore and Thailand, allowing for power to be imported and exported between the three countries. Malaysia also has a number of renewable energy targets in place, including a goal of generating 20% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2025.
