Export And Import Of Bauxite (aluminium) Companies in Malaysia

Bauxite is the main raw material used in the production of alumina and subsequently aluminium. Malaysia has substantial reserves of bauxite located in the states of Johor, Pahang, Perak and Sarawak. However, mining of bauxite has been restricted to a relatively small area since early 1970.

The government's decision to halt bauxite mining in January 2014 was made in response to growing public concern over the environmental impact of the industry. The ban was initially imposed for a three-month period, but was extended indefinitely in March 2014.

While the ban has had a significant impact on the Malaysian bauxite industry, it is not expected to have a significant impact on global alumina or aluminium supply as Malaysia is a relatively small producer of these commodities.
