Export And Import Of Leather Footwear Companies in Malaysia

The leather footwear industry in Malaysia is export-oriented and is one of the country’s leading export earners. In 2016, the value of Malaysia’s leather footwear exports was RM4.4 billion, accounting for 3.4% of the country’s total exports. Malaysia’s leather footwear exports are mainly destined for the US, EU, Japan, and ASEAN markets.

The leather footwear industry in Malaysia is highly fragmented with over 1,000 manufacturers, most of which are small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The industry is dominated by a few large companies, such as Bata Malaysia, which accounted for an estimated 26% of the country’s total leather footwear production in 2016.

The Malaysian Government is supportive of the leather footwear industry and has implemented a number of initiatives to promote the sector. These include the setting up of the Malaysian Leather Industry Development Institute (LIDI) in 1995 and the launch of the National Leather Industry Strategic Plan in 2006.
