Malaysia is a net importer of fertilizers. The country imported US$1.4 billion worth of fertilizers in 2016, up by 22.5% from US$1.1 billion in 2015. The increase was mainly due to higher import volumes of urea and ammonium sulphate.

Malaysia’s top 10 fertilizer suppliers are:

1. China
2. Indonesia
3. Australia
4. India
5. Thailand
6. South Korea
7. Taiwan
8. United States
9. Canada
10. Russia

Malaysia’s fertilizer imports are expected to grow in the coming years as the country looks to boost its agricultural sector. The government has set a target of increasing the sector’s contribution to GDP from 4.5% in 2016 to 5.4% by 2020. This will require an additional 1.5 million tonnes of fertilizer per year.
