The Malaysian automotive industry is a key driver of economic growth, contributing 4.5% to the country’s GDP in 2016. The industry is also a major employer, with over 650,000 people directly employed in the sector.

The Malaysian automotive industry is highly diversified, with a strong presence of local and international companies. The sector is dominated by passenger cars, which account for over 80% of total vehicle production. Other vehicle types include commercial vehicles, motorcycles and engines.

The automotive industry is a significant contributor to the country’s export earnings, with vehicles and parts worth RM140 billion (US$35 billion) exported in 2016. Malaysia’s main export markets are Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, Australia, the United States and Japan.

The Malaysian government is committed to supporting the development of the automotive industry, with a number of initiatives and policies in place to attract investment and encourage growth. These include the National Automotive Policy (NAP), which was last revised in 2014, and the Automotive Development Fund (ADF), which provides financing support for approved automotive projects.
