Mining in Malaysia is an industry that is undergoing strong growth. Mining-related activities are concentrated in the states of Pahang, Johor, Perak, Kelantan, Sabah and Sarawak.

Malaysia is a major producer of bauxite, with reserves estimated at 400 million tonnes. The majority of these reserves are located in the state of Pahang. In 2016, Malaysia produced 22.6 million tonnes of bauxite, making it the world’s second-largest producer after Australia.

The country is also a significant producer of copper, iron ore, tin and gold. In 2016, Malaysia’s mines produced a total of 17.6 million tonnes of copper, 3.7 million tonnes of iron ore, 860,000 tonnes of tin and 96,000 kg of gold.

Malaysia’s mining industry is regulated by the Ministry of Water, Land and Natural Resources. The department is responsible for the issuance of exploration and mining licences, as well as the regulation of the industry.
