Primary education is for children aged between six and 12 years old. It is compulsory for all Malaysian citizens.

Secondary education is for students aged between 13 and 19 years old. It is not compulsory, but it is strongly encouraged by the government.

Post-secondary education is for students aged 20 years and above. It includes diploma and degree programmes.

Tertiary education is for students aged 21 years and above. It includes undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
