A stock is a type of security that represents ownership in a corporation and entitles the holder to vote on corporate matters and to receive dividends. A bond is a debt security, under which the issuer owes the holders a debt and is obliged to pay them interest or to repay the principal at a later date, termed the maturity date.

In Malaysia, stocks and bonds are traded on the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange (KLSE). The KLSE is a member of the Asia Pacific Stock Exchange (APEX), which is the regional body for the securities markets in the Asia-Pacific region. The KLSE offers a wide range of products including shares, bonds, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), and Islamic products.

The Malaysian government has introduced a number of initiatives to develop the country's capital markets. These include the establishment of the Malaysian Securities Commission (MSC) and the Malaysian Exchange (ME). The MSC is the regulator of the securities industry in Malaysia, while the ME is the operator of the KLSE.
