The Malaysian government does not release statistics on the number of businesses in the country. However, the Department of Statistics does provide data on the number of registered businesses. As of December 31, 2017, there were 582,608 registered businesses in Malaysia. This number has likely grown in the past year.

The vast majority of businesses in Malaysia are small and medium enterprises (SMEs). According to the SME Corporation Malaysia, 99.2% of businesses in the country are SMEs. These businesses employ 60% of the workforce and contribute to 38.5% of Malaysia’s GDP.

There are a variety of business types in Malaysia. The most common type of business is a sole proprietorship, which is a business owned and operated by one person. Other common business types include partnerships, limited liability companies, and private limited companies.

The Malaysian government has put in place a number of initiatives to support SMEs. These include the SME Masterplan, which is a blueprint for the development of SMEs in the country. The government has also established the SME Bank, which provides financing and other support to SMEs.
