Trading In Motor Vehicle Companies in Malaysia

The Malaysian motor vehicle industry is one of the country’s most important manufacturing sectors. It plays a significant role in generating employment, income and foreign exchange.

The industry comprises two main sub-sectors: the production of passenger cars and commercial vehicles. Passenger cars are further divided into three categories: small cars (with engine capacities of below 1,500 cc), medium cars (1,500-2,500 cc) and large cars (above 2,500 cc).

In terms of production volume, the small car segment is the largest, accounting for about 60% of total passenger car production in Malaysia. The medium and large car segments each account for around 20% of production.

In terms of value, the large car segment is the most important, followed by the medium car segment. The small car segment is the least important in terms of value.

The Malaysian motor vehicle industry is dominated by foreign companies. The top five producers in Malaysia are Proton, Perodua, Honda, Toyota and Nissan. Together, they account for about 90% of total production.
