FIRE INCIDENT AT SMELTING PLANT IN SAMALAJU

The Board of Directors of PMAHB wishes to inform that a fire incident occured on Saturday, 3 April 2021 at approximately 4.30 a.m. at the smelting plant belonging to its subsidiary Press Metal Bintulu Sdn Bhd ("PM Bintulu") located in Samalaju Industrial Park, Bintulu, Sarawak ("Samalaju Smelter"). PM Bintulu is an 80%-owned subsidiary of PMAHB, principally engaged in the manufacturing of aluminium products.

 

The fire incident occurred at the new Phase 3 operations of Samalaju Smelter, which is primarily under commissioning; and damaged one (1) smelting pot out of the total of three hundred (300) smelting pots located at the plant. Other existing production facilities at Samalaju Smelter were not affected and are running as normal. The fire did not cause any harm to any persons. 

 

Operations in Phase 3 were restored within several hours. There was minimal interruption and the installation ramp-up of smelting line in Phase 3 will re-commence immediately after the damaged pot is repaired within the next few days. 

 

There is no material financial and operational impact to the operations of Samalaju Smelter arising from this incident as the operations in Phase 3 were restored within several hours and all assets are adequately covered by insurance.
